Motivation for the program

Member councils of the Southern Council Group (SCG) noted that individuals and households were making efforts to address climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, saving water and energy and minimising waste. However, businesses in the region needed support to address environmental issues, comply with environmental legislation and operate more sustainably.

We also knew that small to medium local enterprise didn’t have access to the level of resources that large corporations have to meet the challenges and opportunities of changing environmental conditions and legislation, and to position themselves as market leaders in green initiatives.

Through the urban sustainability program the NSW Government’s Environmental Trust made available major projects funds for programs delivered by local government organisations in partnership with other government agencies, local businesses, community organisations and householders. The SCG saw this as an opportunity to work with local business to help them address environmental issues and also to work with our member local councils to become community leaders in environmental management.
