Local aged care residents and staff will lead the way in creating a greener Illawarra following the launch of a $2 million program “Business Treading Lightly” at Warrigal Care, Albion Park Rail on Thursday 29 May. Business Treading Lightly helps local businesses and councils in the Illawarra and South Coast save money and operate more sustainably.

Warrigal Care, a not-for-profit benevolent organisation providing aged care services to NSW communities, was one of the first organisations to sign up for the programme. Mark Sewell, Chief Executive Officer of Warrigal Care said  “As a not–for-profit we’re always interested in cost efficiencies and as an organisation caring for older people we are proud to do our bit for preserving the environment for the next generation “.

Business Treading Lightly will help participating businesses like Warrigal Care save money through efficient energy, water and waste management, as well as review supply chains and fleet management. The program also helps businesses manage environmental risk and responsibility.

Kiama Mayor Sandra McCarthy, chair of Southern Councils Group, which manages Business Treading Lightly, said the innovative program will have many benefits for participating businesses. “As well as saving thousands of dollars through efficient resource use, during an age of increased community expectation about responsible environmental management these businesses will become known as business leaders in environmental performance”, Councillor McCarthy said.

Business Treading Lightly is funded by the NSW Government’s Environmental Trust and works with Sustainability Advantage, an initiative of the NSW Department of Environment and Climate Change.
